ToggleWhat is a porch?
A porch is a covered outdoor area situated next to the house, usually by the entrance, in the garden, on the terrace or at the back. Its main purpose is to create a space sheltered from the sun, rain and wind, whilst maintaining a connection with the outdoors.
Unlike an enclosed room, a porch allows you to enjoy the outdoors in greater comfort and can be adapted for various uses, from a relaxation area to an outdoor dining space. Depending on the design of the house, it can be open, semi-open, glazed, made of wood or built into the structure, amongst other options.
What can a porch bring to your home?
Porches can significantly enhance your home both practically and aesthetically. Among their main benefits, the following stand out:
- It increases usable space: it allows you to create a usable outdoor area for dining, relaxing, reading or socialising with friends and family.
- It offers greater protection: it provides shade and shelter from the sun, rain or wind, provided its orientation and design are suitable.
- It facilitates a connection with the outdoors: it creates a more natural transition between the interior of the home and areas such as the garden, terrace or courtyard.
- It provides everyday comfort and convenience: it allows you to enjoy the outdoors with greater protection and transforms a passageway into a comfortable and functional space.
- It enhances the home’s appearance: it helps to reinforce the house’s architectural style, creates a sense of spaciousness and makes the outdoor area more welcoming.
What should you bear in mind before choosing a porch for your home?
Before going into detail about the different types of porches available today, it is worth considering a few factors that will determine the best choice in each case. In this regard, the main factors influencing the decision are:
- Location and orientation: the position of the porch greatly affects its comfort. If the area is highly exposed to the sun, rain or wind, a more sheltered structure may be required. You should also consider which room leads onto the porch and whether it will have a direct connection to the living room, kitchen, garden or swimming pool.
- Main use: you should also consider whether you intend to use the porch as an outdoor dining area, a relaxation area, a chill-out spot or a space for social gatherings. If you define its use from the outset, you’ll be able to choose the most suitable layout, type of roof and furniture.
- Style of the house: the porch should be consistent with the architecture of the house. In this regard, there are a multitude of styles available, including rustic, Mediterranean, modern and minimalist designs.
- Materials and maintenance: depending on the material used to build the porch, it will offer very different levels of durability and ease of maintenance. It is therefore important to assess how the materials will perform in the sun, in damp conditions and in the face of temperature changes, as well as how much time you wish to devote to maintenance.
- Available space: the size of the porch determines the layout and flow of the space. Before deciding on a type of porch, it is worth working out whether there will be enough space for a table, a sofa, armchairs, sun loungers or decorative items.
- Protection and comfort: in addition to the structure, you can add awnings, outdoor curtains, louvred screens, lighting, outdoor rugs or hard-wearing cushions to create a more comfortable and pleasant atmosphere.

Types of porches for houses: which are the most common?
Below, we’ll look at the different types of porches you can install at your home, categorising them by their location, materials and structure, amongst other aspects.
Front porch
Front porches are situated at the main entrance to the house, making them one of the first features visible from the outside. As such, as well as serving a practical purpose, they have a significant impact on the home’s appearance.
Generally speaking, this type of porch does not require much space and may consist simply of a basic table and chairs and a few decorative items; for this reason, they are also often one of the most economical options. However, in spacious homes, the front porch can also be used as a relaxation area, creating a welcoming space where you can enjoy the outdoors.
Back porch
In contrast, a back porch is situated at the rear of the house, usually connected to the garden, terrace or pool area. Its main advantage over the front porch is that it offers greater privacy and allows you to create a space better suited to everyday use.
A rear porch can therefore be used as an outdoor dining area, a reading nook or a space for family gatherings. As it is more closely linked to everyday life in the home, it is worth planning its layout carefully. Placing a table, several outdoor armchairs and sofas, and a couple of sun loungers can help you make the most of it.
Open porch
An open porch has a roof but is open at the sides, with no walls or enclosures. It is a common choice for homes seeking shade and shelter, but which also want to enjoy better ventilation and a connection with the outdoors.
For this reason, it is well suited to areas with a mild climate, without excessive wind or rain, where the main aim is to provide shelter from the sun. It is also a good option when you want to create a cool, comfortable outdoor space that blends easily with the surrounding environment.
However, as it is more exposed to the elements, it is advisable to choose durable outdoor furniture and suitable fabrics that can withstand daily use.
Enclosed or glazed porch
Another option is to choose an enclosed porch, which features side walls – usually glazed – that provide better protection for the space against wind, rain or changes in temperature. Thanks to this, the porch can be used practically every day, regardless of the weather, offering a greater sense of cosiness.
This design is an attractive option when you want to make the most of the outdoors without being too dependent on the weather, but it needs to be planned carefully so as not to lose the connection with the outdoors. In this regard, it is important to ensure good ventilation and plenty of natural light, as well as choosing furniture that enhances the feeling of space and naturalness.

Wooden porch
In terms of the materials used in their construction, one of the most common types of house porches is the wooden one, which is characterised by its warm, natural and cosy appearance. It is a very popular choice for rustic houses, Mediterranean-style homes, holiday homes or outdoor spaces featuring greenery, stone and natural materials.
Although it adds character and creates a very pleasant atmosphere, wood requires certain care to remain in good condition. It is important that it is treated for outdoor use and receives proper maintenance to protect it from the sun, damp and temperature changes.

Aluminium porch
Aluminium porches, meanwhile, are common in modern homes where a sturdy, lightweight and low-maintenance structure is required. Unlike wood, aluminium withstands outdoor exposure well and allows for clean, contemporary and visually light designs.
Furthermore, an aluminium roof can form part of either an open or enclosed porch, in the latter case combined with glass walls or adjustable slats. Aside from its excellent durability and contemporary appearance, its main benefit is its ease of maintenance, which is particularly important in areas with intense sunshine or high humidity.
Built-in porch
It is also possible to have a built-in porch, that is, one constructed as a fixed part of the house, with pillars, a roof and finishes integrated into the façade. Although this is one of the most aesthetically pleasing options, it requires more careful planning, as well as a higher budget if you wish to build it at a later date.
This type of porch usually uses the same materials, colours and finishes as the rest of the house, creating a very natural visual continuity. Although it can be designed in various styles, it tends to have a more classic and stately appearance.
Porch with a pergola
Opting for a porch with a pergola is a lightweight and versatile way to create shade without a fixed structure. It can be installed next to the house or in a specific area of the garden, allowing you to vary the level of shade depending on the type of covering chosen.
This is one of the most economical and flexible options, although you’ll need to carefully consider the orientation, hours of sunshine and how the space will be used before installing the pergola. If it’s to be used as an outdoor dining area or relaxation spot, it’s also important to calculate the dimensions carefully so that the furniture is protected and the space is comfortable for everyday use.
Freestanding porch
Finally, a freestanding porch is one that is not attached to the house but is installed in a specific area of the garden, next to the swimming pool or in a secluded outdoor space. It is an attractive option for large plots or for creating different atmospheres within the terrace.
It is useful when you want to make the most of an outdoor area away from the front of the house, for example, a corner with better views, a quieter part of the garden or an area near the swimming pool. However, it is important to consider the practical details, such as lighting, the connection to the rest of the house and the type of furniture to be used.
How to furnish your porch depending on the type of space?
Once you’ve chosen the type of porch you want for your home, you’ll also need to decide what furniture to put in it to turn the space into a comfortable, functional area that’s suited to its purpose:
- For a small porch: you can use two outdoor armchairs and a coffee table to create a cosy corner where you can have a coffee, read or relax without taking up too much space. If the area is very small, you can use chairs instead of armchairs.
- For a spacious porch: opt for an outdoor corner suite with a coffee table and a few pouffes around it. This is a very comfortable arrangement for get-togethers, after-dinner chats or moments of relaxation, allowing you to make the most of the space.
- For an outdoor dining area: set up a garden table and chair set, making sure the table is the right size and that the chairs can be moved around easily. You can use outdoor cushions to make the chairs more comfortable to sit on.
- For a chill-out area: a good idea might be to choose an outdoor sofa, a coffee table and several pouffe-style cushions that can serve both as decoration and as seating. This arrangement works very well for creating a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for resting, chatting or making the most of the patio at the end of the day.
- For a poolside porch: in this case, sun loungers are a must, and you could add a small side table between them to hold towels, drinks or sun cream. If the porch gets a lot of sun, a parasol can provide extra shade during the middle of the day.
- For a decorative entrance porch: placing an outdoor armchair with a small side table and some decorative items, such as plant pots or pictures, can significantly enhance the entrance to your home. For this type of porch, it’s best to opt for pieces that are lightweight, durable and easy to maintain.
